The PIS-PASEP Social Integration Program is a Brazilian government-run social program that gives monetary help to low-income employees and their households. PIS stands for Programa de Integrao Social (Social Integration Program), and PASEP stands for Programa de Formao do Patrimnio do Servidor Pblico (Civil Servant Heritage Formation Program).
This system was initially conceived in 1970 and formally carried out in 1971, nevertheless it has undergone a number of modifications and expansions since its inception. The PIS-PASEP program is funded by means of a mix of payroll taxes paid by employers and contributions from the Brazilian authorities.
