Ratha Saptami, also referred to as Magha Saptami, is a Hindu pageant celebrated on the seventh day of the intense fortnight of the Magha month (January-February). It marks the day when the solar god Surya begins his northward journey after the winter solstice. On today, devotees worship Surya and supply prayers for good well being, prosperity, and success.
Ratha Saptami holds nice significance in Hindu mythology. It’s believed that on today, Surya rides a chariot pushed by seven horses, representing the seven colours of the rainbow. The pageant can be related to the legend of Karna, an ideal warrior from the epic Mahabharata, who was recognized for his devotion to Surya. Karna is claimed to have been born on Ratha Saptami, and he’s usually worshipped on today.
